Ease of Use & User Experience
Using PortraitPal is easy and requires no tech skills.
It’s an online AI tool you can use with your browser.
The biggest challenge is finding clear, well-lit photos of yourself without others in the background.
Plan to spend 10–20 minutes searching your camera roll or taking new selfies in different lighting and outfits.
Here’s how it works:
- Take a bunch of selfies.
- Sign up to PortraitPal.
- Upload the selfies.
- Answer a couple of questions.
- Wait for about 60 minutes.
- Get your AI headshots.
Since it’s online, there’s nothing to install, and the AI generates your headshots remotely on PortraitPal’s servers.
You’ll get an email when they’re ready—no need to wait around.
Results, Quality & Accuracy of Headshots
Here’s my favorite AI headshot that I got from PortraitPal:
The quality is not sharp because I zoomed in to make that before-after image.
As a full image, this picture looks really nice.
Also, it’s not just one image you get but a whole bunch more.

These images look pretty much exactly like me. At least at a distance.
The only downside is that a small portion of the images can be morphed, and you might have some issues with your teeth, lips, and fingers.
Also, the closer you look at the images, the more fake they look like.
For example, look at this picture:
By a quick look, this looks good.
But the more you look at it, the less real it looks like. And especially if you zoom in, you’ll see the “AI fakeness” creep in.
Also, this tool doesn’t allow for customizations. You have to be satisfied with what you get.
Customization & Style Options
Unfortunately, PortraitPal just creates your headshots but doesn’t allow for any kind of customization.
There’s no way to control the headshots you get.
This is one of the big misses in my books. I think that there’s always so much uncertainty with AI that you just simply have to be able to control the outputs.
In fact, that’s why I recommend choosing one of the top tools from this list instead.
Speed & Processing Time
This tool is a lot faster than hiring a real photographer.
You might spend about 15-30 minutes choosing the images to send and sending them.
Then wait about 1-2 hours for the headshots to generate.
Yes, it takes some time, but it’s much faster (and cheaper) than hiring a photographer.
Pricing & Value for Money
PortraitPal is a paid tool. The plans start at $35 which is a typical price compared to other paid tools I’ve tested.
But the value for money for me is not that high.
That’s because I’ve tested all these tools, and for example BetterPic.io has the same price but it creates much better results and lets you customize.
However, if I compare these results to free AI headshots, the difference is like night and day.

In this image, I look like a 3D character or a painting almost. That’s not good!
If you compare this with the paid PortraitPal AI headshots, you can see the difference.
This headshot actually looks like me and less like a 3D-rendered character.

Final Verdict: Is It Worth It?
I like PortraitPal. The results are mostly realistic or at least semi-realistic. Also, the headshots have a vintage vibe.
Rating: 4.1/5
However, it’s a bit of a pricey product. Also, there are no customization features.
That’s why my top recommendation is a competing product, BetterPic.io.
